Fall holds a very short window in the Northwest, and at times, the colors are so vividly beautiful, yet colors emerge and then quickly slip away. Anticipation is a powerful drive to capture the colors in their metamorphosis from maturity to the autumn of life. Although I wish the change would last longer - that is precisely what makes these images so stunning to me. I have been to this same location frequently to capture the colors here. However, the length of time that the vivid rouge colors last is so very short and some years less vivid than others, that it becomes a growing desire to find these precious moments from year to year.
Autumn has always been a favorite time of year for me. I remember hiking through Starved Rock State Park in Illinois with my sister Sherry and falling in love with the woodlands that surrounded us on those journeys. During the months of September the colors in the trees would change and create a palette of warmth throughout the wood. Somehow, it felt comforting and welcoming at the same time. Now, when I see the splashes of red, rust and amber that decorate the hillsides, it brings me back to the closeness that we shared in those moments.
Today, whether it be harvest fests, tromping through a corn field maze, sipping caramelized apple cider, or simply warming myself next to the fire - I find that the colors of fall create a magical warmth that somehow feels like home.
